Abstract
Aim: To determine the effects of diet ice cream on blood glucose levels in diabetic children. Subjects and methods: Forty-one diabetic children (Group 1) and 78 non-diabetic, healthy controls (Group 2) were included in the study. All subjects had diet ice cream at 0300-0400 PM and regular ice cream at 1000-1100 AM. Blood glucose levels were determined by glucometer before and two hours after ingestion of the ice cream. The fasting time before ingestion of the ice cream was two hours for diabetic children and three hours for controls. Results: Blood glucose level increased 35 mg/dL in diabetic children and 3.9 mg/dL in controls after ingestion of the diet ice cream. Blood glucose levels increased 50.5 mg/dL in diabetic children and 15.2 mg/dL in controls after ingestion of the regular ice cream. However, the increment in blood glucose level in diabetic children was more prominent with regular ice cream as compared with the diet ice cream, and there was a significant change in the blood glucose levels after both kinds of ice cream (p=0.019 and p=0.028). Conclusion: Blood glucose levels increased slowly with the diet ice cream in diabetic children as compared with regular ice cream. We conclude that diet ice cream may be preferred in diabetic children, in whom blood glucose levels are high or changes in blood glucose level will be harmful.
