Abstract
Perception of state, region or geography as a power depends on whether it has elements of 'capacity, target and influence'. Accordingly, it is possible to associate words related to hard and soft power elements affecting other actors, with power concept. The aim of this study is to determine whether university students in Turkey perceive Europe as a power in their consciousness or not, by revealing the concepts the students associate with Europe using semantic analysis method. With this aim, this study uses results of the survey conducted to 734 students in universities in Erzurum, İstanbul and İzmir in 2009 within the context of EuroBroadMap Project which was funded by EU 7th Framework Programme and coordinated by CNRS in France. This study which is based on the words the students used for defining Europe indicates that, in general, students in Turkey have positive attitudes towards Europe and this area is perceived as power which has soft power elements and, is developed in terms of economy, politics and culture
