Abstract

In this study, an approach that detects the buildings from high resolution satellite imagery is proposed. The developed approach utilizes both the Genetic Algorithms (GA) and the supervised classification method, Fisher Linear Classifier (FLC). In addition, the well known genetic algorithm concepts such as population, chromosome, gene, crossover and mutation are integrated with the fundamental image processing techniques. In this context, a population can be seen as a set of chromosomes (individuals) and each chromosome is composed of definite number of genes (image processing functions). The proposed algorithm is initiated with the selection of training pixels for the building and non-building features from the input image. Then, the image processing functions are applied to the input bands in a chromosome by chromosome basis. After that, the output bands generated from the previous step are classified into two classes using the FLC. In the next step, for each chromosome, a fitness value is computed by comparing the binary classified image and the test data. From these fitness values, the chromosome that yields the highest fitness value is selected as the “elite chromosome” and separated from the others. This process is followed by the selection of the population for the next generation and the diversification operations such as crossover and mutation. These operations are performed according to some predefined probabilities; this means that only the selected chromosomes are affected. This evolutionary process is terminated after a definite number of iterations and the output of the elite chromosome in the last generation is taken as the detected building patches. However, as expected, some false alarm areas may appear. In order to reduce these areas, the morphological image processing operations are applied to the output image. The proposed method is applied on a selected urban area of the city of Batikent, Ankara. The input data used in this study is the 1 meter spatial resolution pan-sharpened IKONOS image generated from the fusion of 4 meters spatial resolution multispectral (Red, Green, Blue: RGB) and 1 meter spatial resolution panchromatic IKONOS imagery acquired on August 4, 2002. After applying the developed methodology, the approximate detection rate of 91% is obtained over the predefined test regions. This study is found to be quite promising due to its satisfactory results.
