Abstract

Due to rapid improvement of high resolution satellites, it is thought that topographic mapping is possible by using these satellites. Because SPOT 5 imagery is thought to be one of the ideal sources for topographic map production, in order to evaluate the feature extraction capabilities of 2.5 m resolution stereo SPOT 5 imagery, they were compared with 1:35.000 scale stereo aerial photos on the same 1:25.000 scale map. It was concluded that with stereo SPOT 5 imagery it was possible to compile % 68 of the features of the test area and % 32 were left for field compilation. It can be inferred from the compilation that by using 2.5 m resolution SPOT 5 stereo imagery it is not very suitable to use SPOT 5 imagery alone to comply with the compilation needs of 1:25.000 scale topographic maps. Because 1:50.000 scale topographic maps contain fewer details than 1:25.000 scale maps, it may be feasible to use stereo SPOT 5 imagery for compilation of 1:50.000 scale topographic maps.
