Abstract

Since the dawn of the mankind, humans sometimes could find no way out of natural disasters and were convinced that these incidents were the wraths of God(s). At other times, they tried to overcome their problems by facing them. Dams were built, forests were attempted to be renewed, agricultural technology and food storage processes were improved as an answer to the natural menaces as earthquake, flood, landslide, fire or avalanche. However, the unnecessary interventions to the nature were mostly by the humans themselves. On the other side, some animals caused periodical disasters because of the setbacks in their ecosystem. One of these animals were rats that damaged the agricultural products, destroyed their surroundings since they were rodents and carried diseases between and within the species as pests that lived mostly in the sewers. This article aims to discuss the measures taken against mice in Galata within the context of hygiene and public health between the years of 1880-1905.
