Abstract
Aim: To find out whether there is a difference on oral and dental health knowledge between the primary school students educated descriptively by a dentist and schoolteacher. Methods: The study included fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh grade students (n=283) in Istanbul Hekimoğlu Ali Paşa Primary School. A questionnaire consisting of 8 questions were applied to students who were at the fourth and fifth years, and questionnaire consisting of 7 questions were applied to students who were at the sixth and seventh years, before and after education. Than both of the students groups were divided into to two at random. Dentists educated one of the groups descriptively and schoolteachers educated the other group descriptively. Results: Average level of knowledge of the fourth and fifth years students increased to 81.5 % from 80.6 %, and increased to 55.4 % from 46 % among the sixth and seventh years students educated by teachers. Average level of knowledge of the fourth and fifth years students increased to 88.5 % from 85.2 % and increased to 59.7% from 58.5% among the sixth and seventh years students educated by dentists. Conclusion: Our results suggest that, it is not possible to reach perfect knowledge by descriptive education, but if it is necessary education by teachers will be most useful.
