Abstract

Position changes can be obtained in the form of time series by high-precision GPS measurements. When the periodic components of the time series are examined at the dimension of size and frequency, it can be seen that the GPS signals contains the longperiod movements at low frequency and the vibration movements at short time period at high-frequency. Moreover, it is well known that the measured signal includes a certain noise since it has the characteristic of being random. The dominant frequencies consist of the sum of the same-frequency signals that are repeated within the signal. After a series of processes, the GPS signal is represented in converted to the dimension of frequency domain by Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). Thus, the main signal is decomposed/separated to sub-signals and the magnitudes of the periodic components are determined for each frequency. The signals which are not repeated by FFT are not taken into account, whereas the periodic ones within complex signals are determined and seperated into their harmonic components. By such a process, the data will be converted into a form which should be then used for interpretation of the behaviour of the measured structure against physical forces. In this study, the spectral analysis of a sample GZK GPS time serial obtained with a 20 Hz record frequency aimed for structural monitoring is performed by FFT method and the dominant periodic components are examined.
