Abstract

Selection of optimum factors and map production methods are main crucial components of landslide susceptibility mapping process. Unfortunately, there are no universal guidelines regarding the selection of factors in landslide susceptibility mapping. The main purpose of this study was to determine an optimal factor model within the available landslide conditioning factors and investigation of suitable prediction method for landslide susceptibility mapping. For this purpose, stepwise regression method was used to determine the optimal factor model. In addition, this study investigates the map prediction method of logistic regression and random forest for producing landslide susceptibility map. All optimum factor models were tested using overall accuracy, kappa value, area under the ROC curve and AUC value. Also, McNemar's test statistic was also applied to test the statistical significance of performance differences for factor models. As a result of the study, the optimum factor model was established as Model-6 consisting of 6 landslide causative factors (NDVI, elevation, aspect, lithology, topographic wetness index and slope) by applying stepwise regression method. The highest overall accuracy (88.27%) was estimated by RF algorithm for the dataset including 6 factors selected with Stepwise algorithm (Model-6). Results showed that the optimum factor model determined by stepwise regression and random forest method outperformed the conventional LR method by about 8% and this level of difference was found to be statistically significant.
