Abstract
Aim: To investigate the knowledge and practices of the Turkish mothers on newborn jaundice.Materials and methods: This study was conducted on 400 mothers who delivered healthy newborns in the Etlik Zubeyde Hanim Women's and Maternity Research and Training Hospital between the dates of May 2012 and September 2012. A questionnaire was used to assess the mothers' knowledge on neonatal jaundice. The answers were gathered and the data were compared in respect to mothers's literacy, parity, employment and economical status. Results: In the study group; one hundred fifty seven mothers were primiparous (39.2%), 243 mothers were multiparous (60.8%). Two hundred fourteen mothers (53.5%) have had information on jaundice and the most common source of information was health staff (45%). When the mothers were asked about the reasons of the jaundice occurence; 56% answered correctly. When the mothers were asked about the harmful effects and treatment modalites of jaundice, 22.2% and 43.7% gave correct answers, respectively. Eighty-two percent (82%) of the mothers think that the jaundice is a normal condition in newborn period and 69.9% of the mothers become aware of the jaundice by the yellow discoloration of the baby's skin. Conclusion: The information of mothers on the reasons and treatment modalities of jaundice in Turkey is acceptable, however; there is a lack of knowledge regarding the harmful effects of jaundice. In order to get rid of this important national health wellfare problem; mothers should be educated in every opportunity such as pregnancy followups, hospitalisation period soon after delivery. Besides; national campaigns regarding jaundice should be implented across the country
