Abstract

In this paper, for the real sector firms operating in Turkey, the foreign exchange rate risk position preference, its reasons and effects of foreign exchange rate risk hedging transactions on this preference in the period of 2003-2010 are analyzed. In the first section, the effects of foreign exchange rate risk on the firm’s balance sheets are examined. By comparing foreign exchange and Turkish Lira denominated borrowing costs, the second section deals with the developments in the foreign exchange position of the sector in order to explain reasons that created these developments. In examining the foreign exchange position of the real sector firms, besides Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey data, the data that is obtained from the 2007-2010 period financial reports of the 213 companies listed in Istanbul Stock Exchange is used and based on this data the use of foreign exchange rate risk hedging transactions in the sector is observed. Then, by also taking into consideration the cost of hedging, the costs of borrowing in Turkish Lira for those firms are compared with the costs of foreign exchange borrowing. Finally, based on historical data the optimum level of foreign exchange position, or the effective hedging rate, is determined. Consequently, some suggestions that would help reducing foreign exchange rate risk of the real sector are presented in the final section
