Abstract

Analyses in this study focus on the physical, chemical and hydrological properties of Derme Stream located in the province of Malatya. Water inlets and outlets from the stream exist both at the irrigation season and at the outside of the irrigation season in Derme Stream system. The effect of this inlet and outlet are investigated by means of physical and chemical analyses. Irrigation water quality classification is made according to these results of the analyses. In the study, water samples were taken from eleven different locations along the Derme Stream and the irrigation canal, that located at downstream at different time periods. Temperature (⁰C) value in Derme stream is between 11.4 and 17.9 ⁰C; the pH value is between 8.27 – 9.07; the electrical conductivity (EC) value is between 200 – 344 μS/cm and the dissolved oxygen (DO) value is between 8.2 – 11.25 mg/l. Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) values at Derme stream ranged from 0 to 482 mg/l; Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) vary between 0 - 160 mg/l. Water of Derme stream classified as ammonia (NH4 + ), nitrite (NO2 - ), nitrate (NO3 - ) and (PO4)ˉ³ is in I. II., III. and IV category according to “Turkish Water Pollution Control Regulation (2008)”. In terms of BOİ and KOİ pollution parameters, also water class is in I. and II. category. Analysis results made on the surface water of Derme stream indicate that stream water has been contaminated in sampling periods due to environmental factors such as agricultural activity, wastewater discharge and flood event. Derme stream in terms of irrigation water quality has been classified as C1S1 and C2S1 on the basis of the electric conductivity and SAR. All the parameters analyzed of Derme stream are within the limits needed for agricultural purpose and thus demonstrated its suitability for irrigation purposes.
