Abstract
Acute gastroenteritis is among the most important causes of both morbidity and mortality in children. Rotaviruses are the most common viral causes of diarrhea with serious dehydration. In the present study the frequency of rotavirus antigen positivity was evaluated retrospectively in the stool samples of pediatric patients with acute gastroenteritis admitted to Bezmialem Vakif University Hospital between September 2011 and September 2012 in respect to month and age groups. In this study, rotavirus antigen was sought in 6749 stool samples by using immunochromatographic method, and positivity was detected in 821 samples (12.2 %). An increase in the number of cases with rotavirus antigen-positivity was detected in winter and spring months. The largest number of rotavirus antigen-positive cases were seen in January. In this study, rotavirus antigen-positivity was most frequent (23 %) in patients between 12-24 month’s age. In conclusion, rotavirus infections, which are important causes of acute gastroenteritis in patients aged between 0-5 years, should be kept in mind in making diagnosis and managing the disease.
