Abstract

Background and Aim: A well-designed access cavity reduces procedural errors during endodontic treatment. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of visual demonstration on the improvement of the access cavity preparation done by preclinical students. Materials and Methods: This study included 102 third-grade students. The students were asked to prepare the access cavity of an extracted human maxillary central incisor in a 40 minutes lesson time and score their own access preparation (Group I). The access cavities were then scored by 3 instructors including a post graduate student with 2 years of experience, an endodontist with PhD 4 years of experience and a professor (Group II). Following the assessment, specialists with at least two years of experience demonstrated the access cavity preparation of a central incisor. The students were asked to prepare the other mounted extracted teeth of access cavity. Access cavity preparations after the demonstration were assessed and scored by the students themselves (Group III) and by the instructors (Group IV). The differences in scores before and after demonstration were statistically analyzed by repeated-measures ANOVA and McNemar tests. Results: As a result of this study no statistically difference was found between the scores of Group I and III (p=0.392) but there was a significant difference between the scores of Group II and IV (p<0.001). Conclusion: It can be concluded that the demonstration procedure improved the success of access cavity preparation.
