Abstract
Hepatitis B and C viral inf ections and their consequences constitute an important public health problem. They spread through unsaf e therapeutic injections, blood transf usions, childbirth (f rom mother to child), unprotected sex, and cosmetic applications (tattoos, ear piercing, manicure, pedicure and haircut in the barber) perf ormed with improperly sterilized instru- ments. Taking the Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C prevalence in Turkey into account, these institutions may play a role in spread of these diseases and our study aimed to determine the knowledge level and practices of employees in the hairdressers, barbers and beauty parlours f irst time in Manisa as f ar as Hepatitis was concerned. Face to f ace questionnaires were conducted with 156 individuals sampling in 2011. The questionnaire contained 46 questions about the sociodemographic characteristics, pro- f essional experience, working conditions, and the level of knowledge as well as the measures taken to prevent inf ection. It was f ound that 40 % of the participants had no idea about the contagion of Hepatitis B and 84 % about the contagion of Hepatitis C, while 62 % had not been checked f or and vaccinated against Hepatitis B. It was determined in our study that most of the participants in the questionnaire were not suff iciently inf ormed about personal hygiene and the sterilization of instruments, and that they had erroneous practices in this regard. Survey results are given detailed education on Hepatitis. It was concluded f rom these observations that the employees in hairdressers, barbers and beauty parlours should continue to receive training to prevent contagion of hepatitis, and also that f urther eff orts should be made to ensure that a greater proportion of them uses personal protection.
