Abstract
Background and Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the oral hygiene status of residents living in a residential home.Subjects and Methods: Fifty-five residents (22 women and 33 men) with a mean age of 77.82±7.96 years and living in Seyranbaglari Residential Home, Ankara, which depends on the state, were surveyed regarding their oral hygiene practices, selfperceived oral health and denture status. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS package. Chi-square tests were used to compare variables. Results: While 56% of the residents were completely edentulous, 72.7% were partially edentulous. The mean number of natural teeth was 5.25 ± 8.06 for removable partial denture wearers. The most reported cause of tooth lost was poor oral hygiene (74.7%). It is found that 37.5% of the removable denture users did not remove them during the night. Meanwhile, 52.0% were either only washing their dentures or were not soaking the dentures in water/solution during the nights. The 25% of all respondents were not performing any oral hygiene procedure at all. No statistically significant relationship was detected between having a systemic disorder and denture cleaning (p= 0.294). Conclusion: The residents, in particular wholly or partially edentulous ones, living in residential homes should be comprehensively informed about the importance of oral hygiene maintenance and denture cleaning procedures.
