Abstract

The aim of this study, recovery of iron (Fe) and other plant nutrients in the steel making slags and mill scales resulting from the iron and steel industry which classified as non-hazardous wastes were examined. The other purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of these elements on plant growth. After steel slags and mill scales were grinded, concentration of Cd-Cu-Ni-Pb-Zn-Cr-Be-B-Ti-V-Cr-Mn-Fe-Co-Ni-Cu-Zn-As-Se-Sr-Mo-CdSb-Ba-Pb in the wastes were analyzed with Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS) in order to determine the total nutrient and potential of pollutant. The initial total Fe content of arc furnace slag, slag of under the grid and mill scales were 23%, 55% and 40% respectively. In the second step to prepare ferrous fertilizer solution from wastes of iron and, slag of under grid and mill scales were chosen because of them Fe concentrations are higher than other sample. For this purpose, samples of slag and scale were solubilized with chelating agent ethylenediamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) and concentrated nitric acid (HNO3). Element content of the fertilizer solution ferrous prepared with EDTA and HNO3 was also determined in ICP-MS. After solubilization process, water-soluble Fe contents of the fertilizer solution ferrous for EDTA and HNO3 were determined in order of 6% and 2% by mass, respectively. Then, ferrous fertilizer solution was applied to be 0, 4 and 8 mg/kg to three different doses to plants of Zea mays grown in the laboratory conditions.
