Abstract

Having a better understanding of the historic process of foreign language teaching in Turkey is important for developing foreign language teaching practices. Furthermore, having a better understanding of Turkish education history will simplify future teaching planning and eliminate mistakes. Robert College was opened by Americans in Ottoman land in 1863 and it continues teaching to this day in the Republic of Turkey. In order to understand the foreign language teaching methods employed by Robert College, it is necessary to review the foreign language practices of the college. Hence, this study has been based on the practices related to Ottoman Era foreign language education, thoughts of state officials related to foreign language and its education as well as the needs related to foreign language teaching. With the purpose of having a better understanding of the progress and needs related to foreign language teaching in Ottoman State, the study has been focused on two different eras: before and after the Tanzimat reform era, which had an important place in Ottoman world of thought. Furthermore, the National Independence War and the early years of the Republic have also been reviewed in general terms. Most of the studies related to Robert College are about the Foreign Schools and they focus on the missionary activities of the college. However, despite acknowledging this fact, the current study is on how the foreign language teaching methods of Robert College have been progressed over the years. Further to the foreign language teaching methods of the college, the importance and adopted principles of the founders, lecturers and directors of the college have been reviewed to see the impact on the foreign language teaching of the college.
