Abstract
A Corinthian capital (Inv. No. 9087) acquired through purchase by the Bursa Museum stands out with its decorative scheme. On display at the garden of the Museum, the capital is decorated with acanthus leaves and various floral motifs in the field over the acanthuses. In addition, its abacus is decorated with Lesbian cymation, which is quite unusual for Corinthian capitals. This article surveys all the characteristics of the capital exploring its regional features and the period it belongs to. It will be endeavored to date the capital through the stylistic development of acanthus leaves and Lesbian cymation. An attempt will be made to identify the floral motifs rendered on all four sides of the capital. Furthermore, the stylistic development of the decorative scheme attested on the capital will be explored through regional and other examples.
