Abstract
Rinderpest (cattle plague) is among the animal diseases that has caused the most important losses throughout history. This disease, which is seen among cattle, expands rapidly through the virus and gives rises to the death of many animals. The outbreak of cattle plague, believed to be originated from Asia, was first effective in Europe and caused a large number of buffalo and cattle to perish. This has laid the groundwork for the establishment of veterinary schools in Europe aimed at training specialists in animal diseases. Moreover, international congresses and meetings were held to discuss the reasons for the occurrence and spread of the epidemic. Though the cattle plague was effective in the Ottoman Empire in different periods, it spread to Anatolia over the Balkans, especially after The Russo Turkish War of 1877–1878. From the last quarter of the 19th century, the plague epidemic, which was effective in many parts of the Ottoman geography, dealt a major blow to the economy and stockbreeding of the Ottoman State. This study aims to give information about cattle plague outbreaks in Denizli and precautionary measures taken by the Ottoman Empire against outbreaks.
