Abstract

When the Lefkoşe (Nicosia) Fortress was lost on September 9, 1570, the Girne and Baf Sanjaks were organized and Nicosia was made the center sanjak, which altogether constituted the Ottoman Administration on the Island. When Magosa was captured on August 1, 1571 and the whole of the island was included de facto in the Ottoman territory, the administrative organization was completed. In order to benefit from the Timar Holders to defend Cyprus, Alaiye from the Anadolu Governors Unit, İçil from the Karaman Governors Unit, Sis from Dulkadir Governors Unit, and Tarsus Sanjaks from Aleppo Governors Unit were included within the territory of Cyprus. In this way, the Cyprus Governors Unit was included in the Ottoman Organizational history as the first upper-level administrative unit “with its center on an island”. The Cadastral Record Book of Cyprus, which was started on October 9, 1571, after the conquest of Cyprus, was completed on October 18, 1572. The first Cadastral Record Book that included the registers of Cyprus is registered in Title Deed and Cadaster General Directorate, in Kuyud-ı Kadime Archives with the number 64. The administrative units in Cyprus were mentioned as Lefkoşa, Magosa, Mesariye, Karpas, Girne, Pendaye, Hırsofu, Baf, Evdim, Limasol, Mazoto and Tuzla. The registers on pages between 431-437 in this book belong to Tuzla District. In the present study, the names, numbers, estimated population, the cultivated crops and the taxes received will be determined based on the Cadastral Record Book.
