Abstract
One of the most important problems in the world has been the disposal of the solid waste produced due to comatose consumption of the rapidly increasing population in the last century. Developed countries with increasing environment consciousness tried to dispose their solid waste by building solid waste landfill areas. In solid waste landfill areas, achieving the impermeability of the landfill areas is very important in order to prevent the waste leachate mixing with underground or surface water and threatening the health of the living. Impermeability can only be achieved by obtaining and applying materials with correct method. One of these materials is clay and the other one is geosynthetic materials. In this study, clay and geosynthetics which are the materials used to achieve impermeability, were examined in detail. Besides, the necessary layer thickness of clay, being the most important aspect of them, was also be determined by experiments.
