Abstract

The intellectual sense of belonging that Yaqub ibn. Ishaq al-Kindi, the first Muslim philosopher, had has been subject to much debate for a long time. While some authors in Islamic philosophy describe him as a philosopher acting under the influence of the Mu’tazilah, others consider him the founder of the Mashai tradition of Islam. We will examine exactly where al-Kindi stands between the two schools of thought with reference to a number of subjects, and try to suggest that his accumulation of scientific knowledge and genuine ideas may not allow us to position him at a fixed place.
