Abstract

This study investigated science teachers' thoughts, practices, and suggestions regarding the new assessment and evaluation approach. The research was conducted with thirty-five science teachers working in three different provinces according to the phenomenological design based on a qualitative research approach. An open-ended interview form was used as a data collection tool. Since science teachers' opinions about the new assessment and evaluation system were investigated in the study, the purposive sampling method was used. According to the results obtained from the study, it was revealed that the teachers stated that open-ended exams were helpful in terms of measuring students' high-level skills. However, they were difficult to prepare and implement. In addition, other results revealed that this practice helps teachers prepare high-level questions and continuously improve themselves. However, there is a difficulty due to the conflict with central exams, and ensuring content validity and evaluation in exams is not easy. Suggestions such as starting this practice from primary school, having the Ministry administer the exams, removing scenarios, and giving teachers more freedom were offered by teachers.
