Abstract

Excessive pricing, particularly during periods of crisis, is often perceived by consumers as unfair and unethical, strongly triggering complaint behavior. With digitalization, such reactions have become more visible, persistent, and public through online complaint platforms. This study aims to examine digital consumer complaints about excessive pricing within the framework of consumer complaint typology, test the validity of the existing typology using large-scale digital data, and analytically classify consumers’ levels of anger expressed in their complaints. The dataset comprises 22,112 consumer complaints retrospectively retrieved from the Şikayetvar platform on December 6, 2022, using the keywords “excessive” and “excessive price” and identified as directly related to excessive pricing. The existing five-category consumer complaint typology— informers, comparers, providers of evidence and support, individual action takers, and consumers requesting action from authorities—was applied through deductive content analysis. Anger levels were identified inductively without relying on a pre-existing classification, and the coded data were analyzed using machine learning algorithms. The findings demonstrate that consumer complaint types are distinguishable within digital complaint discourse and can be classified by machine learning models with meaningful accuracy and F1 scores. Systematic relationships were also identified between complaint types and anger levels. Consumers requesting action from authorities were concentrated at high anger levels, whereas informers were characterized by low anger levels. The study provides a typology-based, data-driven contribution to the literature on excessive pricing and pricing ethics and highlights the analytical value of digital complaint data for understanding consumer behavior.
