Abstract

Traditional finance theories' rational, human-centered approach has demonstrated insufficiency in clarifying investor behavior. In this context, behavioral finance trends, such as cognitive illusions, external factors, herd behavior, and demographic and socioeconomic influences on decision-making processes, have gained prominence over time. The Behavioral Finance Scale was employed in this study to determine whether the behavioral finance tendencies of individual investors when making decisions differed significantly based on demographic characteristics. The scale in question consists of the following dimensions: “External Factors and Herd Behavior”, “Demographic and Socioeconomic Factors”, and “Cognitive Illusions”. The research sample included 401 participants aged 18 and over living in Istanbul, Çanakkale, and Izmir. In the first stage of data analysis, the demographic characteristics of the participants were evaluated using frequency analysis, and then the normality of the data related to the research variables was examined using skewness and kurtosis coefficients. Then, in order to determine the factor structure of the scale, Exploratory Factor Analysis was carried out and reliability was examined by Cronbach’s Alpha. In the last step, the study hypotheses were tested using independent samples t-test and one-way ANOVA. The research results show different tendencies of behavioral finance according to demographic variables. Remarkable differences were found particularly in the fields of Cognitive Illusions, External Factors and Herd Behavior, affected by different demographic characteristics. In contrast, only in the dimension Demographic and Socioeconomic Factors there was a significant difference, depending on the work status variable. In summary, the segmenting of investors on the basis of demographic characteristics is expected to result in more effective strategies for financial decision making.
