Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the bidirectional and asymmetric relationships between the foreign exchange arbitrage volume, which is made through digital banking channels, and exchange rates in Türkiye. For this purpose, the relationships between the digital foreign exchange arbitrage transaction volume and the US dollar, Chinese yuan, euro, British pound, Swiss franc, Japanese yen and Russian ruble were analysed using the asymmetric causality test developed by Hatemi-J (2012), for the period of 2007–2025. The most important finding of the study is that there are asymmetric relationships between the digital foreign exchange arbitrage transaction volume and all the selected exchange rates except the yen. It was found that the dollar and franc exchange rates are seen as safe havens by investors and are affected by both increases and decreases in arbitrage volume. The results show that foreign exchange arbitrage made through digital platforms and changing investor behaviour can affect exchange rates in different ways. Therefore, it would be beneficial for individuals and institutions that have foreign exchange transactions and investors who invest in foreign exchange markets to make decisions by evaluating the relationships between digital arbitrage volume and exchange rates. Another important finding of the study is that there are asymmetric relationships only from the dollar, franc and yuan exchange rates to the digital foreign exchange arbitrage transaction volume. This finding reveals that increases or decreases in relevant exchange rates are important factors that direct investors' foreign exchange arbitrage transactions on digital platforms. Asymmetric responses of the investors to changes in exchange rates indicate that digital arbitrage behaviour depends not only on price advantage but also on stability and predictability. Therefore, it would be appropriate to shape foreign exchange market policies on the basis of these factors. JEL Classification : C58 , G11 , F31

JEL Classification : C58 , G11 , F31
