Abstract

Violence against women is a significant public health issue and a violation of human rights. Interdisciplinary efforts are being made to address this issue, and strategies for raising awareness, prevention, and intervention are being developed. Accordingly, this study aimed to investigate the phenomenon of violence against women in the province of Gümüşhane. The study was conducted using a general survey method, and the data were collected through stratified sampling. In this context, 391 female participants aged between 20 and 60 were reached. Sociodemographic information form and Domestic Violence Against Women Scale were used as data collection tools. As a result of the research, it was determined that 11% of the participants were injured due to violence, and 5% of them obtained a medical report from a health committee. The reasons why women remain silent in the face of violence include feelings of shame, fear of being blamed, disbelief in receiving help, and concerns that seeking assistance may lead to increased violence or the end of their marriage. Common reasons for men's violence against women include the man's family, upbringing, and financial issues. According to the research findings, it is important to implement educational programs to raise societal awareness, strengthen support services for women who are victims of violence, and effectively enforce legal sanctions in combating violence against women. This research, which provides up-to-date information on domestic violence through face-to-face interviews, is expected to contribute to professionals and policymakers working in the field by helping to assess current strategies and develop appropriate prevention and intervention efforts.
