Abstract

This study employed a mixed-methods design, integrating quantitative and qualitative approaches, to examine the relationship between social exclusion, life satisfaction among older adults living in nursing homes, and staff attitudes toward older adults. The study was conducted in public nursing homes in Ankara, Türkiye. The sample consisted of 100 older adults and 50 nursing home staff members, selected using a convenience sampling method. Quantitative data were collected using a Sociodemographic Information Form, Kogan’s Attitudes Toward Old People Scale, the Social Exclusion Scale, and the Life Satisfaction Scale. Qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis. The findings revealed that staff attitudes toward older adults were above a moderate level and were significantly associated with education level. The majority of older adult residents reported having chronic illnesses and expressed general satisfaction with the healthcare services provided. The levels of life satisfaction and social exclusion among participants were found to be moderate. Significant relationships were identified between life satisfaction and social exclusion scores and variables such as income status, perceived health status, and receipt of nursing care. Furthermore, a negative relationship was found between social exclusion and life satisfaction among older adults. Subdimensions such as material deprivation, social support, and access to transportation and financial services were found to play a significant role in this relationship. The findings indicate that life satisfaction among older adults in nursing homes is influenced not only by health status but also directly by social support, economic conditions, and levels of social exclusion. Additionally, the education level of nursing home staff was found to influence their attitudes toward older adults, which may indirectly contribute to the quality of care. In this context, strengthening training programs for nursing home staff and improving social support mechanisms and economic resources are recommended.
