Abstract
From early childhood onward, one of the fundamental elements shaping children's identity development, social relationships, and perceptions of societal roles is their perception of females and males. Despite global efforts toward gender equality, occupational stereotypes continue to be transmitted to children through family, media, and education, and are reinforced particularly through communication channels such as advertisements. Advertisements not only convey consumer messages, but also produce symbolic representations of social roles by offering models of what it means to be female or male. In this context, occupational identities are often framed by gender stereotypes that may limit children's perceptions of career possibilities. This study examines preschool children's perceptions of females and males and how they make sense of occupational roles through advertisements. Focusing on 60- to 72-month-old children—a critical developmental period during which societal norms begin to be internalized and gender-based worldviews are formed—the research aims to reveal the extent to which advertisements serve to perpetuate occupational segregation by reinforcing stereotypes regarding females and males. The study group consisted of 46 children whose parental consent was obtained and who attended two public kindergartens and two private Turkish preschool institutions in the city center of Konya. Following a structured prompt, the children were asked to draw specific occupations, and the drawings were evaluated through descriptive analysis in terms of female and male representations. The findings indicate that the roles attributed to females and males are reproduced through media and advertisements; however, they also demonstrate that there is potential for transformation and flexibility in children's perceptions.
