Abstract

Ernest Chausson, one of the prominent composers of French music in the Romantic era, is particularly distinguished by the works he composed in the field of vocal music. The individualistic approach of 19th-century Romantic music is clearly evident in Chausson’s oeuvre. The composer successfully integrates the stylistic characteristics of the period with his own musical idiom. Although he also composed works for solo instruments and orchestra, his greater emphasis on vocal music led him to develop a stylistically distinctive approach compared to his contemporaries. The analysis of the Op. 13 song cycle, which constitutes the focus of this study, reveals that its compositional understanding displays a musical trajectory that differs from his other works. Chausson’s highly effective synthesis of text and music is evident in this cycle, and his use of intervals and dynamics presents various challenges for vocal technique. Despite not being as widely recognized as other major composers of his time—such as Massenet, Berlioz, and Auber—and despite his relatively small output, Chausson’s works hold significant musical value both in his own era and today. In music history, it is often noted that Chausson filled the stylistic gap between Massenet, Franck, and Debussy. In this context, he can be regarded as a bridge linking evolving musical approaches of the period. This study emphasizes not only the significance of the composer in his historical context but also his distinctive musical language, demonstrated through the Op. 13 song cycle. A descriptive and qualitative musicological analysis was adopted as the research model. The analytical process examined formal structure, intervallic and dynamic usage, and thematic relationships. By analyzing the works of Chausson—who, despite their musical significance, have remained relatively overlooked within French Romantic music—this study aims to contribute to the field.

Özet

Romantik dönem Fransız müziğinin önemli bestecilerinden olan Chausson, vokal müzik alanında bestelediği eserlerle ön plana çıkmış bir bestecidir. 19. yy.
