Abstract

This study focuses on exploring the theoretical and performative aspects of Casey Cangelosi’s Wicca for multipercussion. For this purpose, firstly, preliminary information about the composer and the use of percussion instruments in the related repertoire was compiled. Then, using the musical analysis method created within the framework of the elements of meter, polyrhythm, ornamentation, performance technique and musical expression, the performance and the score of the work that is the subject of the research were examined and the way the aforementioned elements are used was revealed and interpreted. What makes Wicca different and important is the fact that it primarily contributes to the limited repertoire of percussion and that it was composed with an innovative approach, without being tied to a specific musical genre. Cangelosi composed Wicca using rich rhythmic motifs and polyrhythms with a strong sense of rhythm and the confidence of having internalized the heterorhythmic structure. In addition, Cangelosi used extremely difficult performance techniques in this work, while at the same time emphasizing the elements of musical expression and ornamentation techniques. Thus, thanks to the performance techniques used by the composer, each of which creates different timbres, it has been understood that the sound range of the work has been expanded and the timbral characteristics of these instruments are as important as their rhythmic characteristics, and the expression of the work has been enriched thanks to the musical expression elements and ornamentation techniques used.
