Abstract

This study aimed to review articles that investigated the effectiveness of music-based interventions in developing language and communication skills in children with special needs. This study reviewed and evaluated articles published on the subject between 2014 and 2024. Data regarding the publication years, research processes, intervention practices, and outcome trends of the articles, as determined by the inclusion and exclusion criteria, were analyzed. The analysis of the study’s key findings indicated that the publications predominantly focused on children with autism spectrum disorder and the middle childhood age group (ages 6-11). Interventions targeted various aspects of language, communication, and social development, including verbal communication, vocabulary, speech intelligibility, and social interaction, through music therapy and other music-based interventions. The findings indicate that music-based interventions contribute to the development of language and communication skills in children with special needs. Furthermore, increasing the number of evidence-based and generalizable studies using true experimental designs would enable more robust and definitive conclusions in this area.
