Abstract
This study examines Erich Fromm’s work, The Heart of Man: Its Genius for Good and Evil, within the context of the psychology of religion, moral philosophy, and social psychology. Fromm addresses human potentials for love and destructiveness by moving away from biological reductionism, focusing instead on the axes of freedom, character, and social conditions. In the work, violence is analyzed through its reactive, compensatory, and destructive forms, while human orientations either life-affirming or life-consuming are discussed through the opposition of “biophilia” and “necrophilia.” Furthermore, modern man's search for authority, belonging, and meaning is evaluated through concepts such as individual and social narcissism, incestuous ties, freedom, and choice. Fromm’s interpretations of the Old Testament and Christianity center on the idea that man is a being capable of choosing between good and evil. Consequently, the work provides an interdisciplinary perspective that allows for a combined understanding of human destructive and productive orientations.
