Abstract
This study examines the representation of motorcycle courier accidents in Turkish national media and the mechanisms of responsibility attribution in the context of the expanding platform economy. A mixed-methods content analysis was applied to 874 news articles published across five national newspapers and two news agencies between 2015 and 2024. Drawing on Framing Theory, Risk Society Theory, and Platform Economy literature, the analysis reveals a pronounced individualization bias in media representations. Sixty-five percent of articles attribute accidents to individual factors, whereas systemic determinants including algorithmic management pressures, precarious working conditions, and regulatory deficiencies appear in only 15% of coverage. The remaining 20% comprises environmental factors (10%), vehicle-related factors (5%), and unclassified or unspecified causes (5 %), a distribution that further illustrates the fragmented and incomplete manner in which media accounts address accident causality. Couriers are predominantly framed through two dichotomous representations: "helpless victim" (35%) and "reckless/culpable" (25%). Together, these two frames account for 60% of all coverage, while the remaining 40% consists of objective/informational (20%), dramatizing/emotional (12%), system-critical (3%), and other representational forms (5%). These dichotomous frames are assessed as the primary vehicles of the broader individualization tendency (65%), as both the "victim" and "culpable" frames redirect responsibility away from structural actors toward individuals. Platform and employer responsibility receives minimal coverage (8 %). Visual analysis indicates that 70 % of images focus on dramatic post-accident scenes. Safety discourse is largely confined to helmet use, with other protective equipment and employer obligations rarely discussed. Notably, episodic framing increased from 65 % in 2015 to 75 % in 2024, suggesting that dominant representation practices have not evolved despite growing public awareness of platform labor precarity. This study contributes to platform economy and media studies literature by empirically documenting how systemic risks are rendered invisible through individualized media frames, with implications for occupational safety policy and responsible journalism practice.
