Abstract

Ipek (Peja/Pec) is an important area regarding the observation of the social structure and demographic features of 19th century. It may be considered as a significant example that exposes clearly the Ottoman’s multi-ethnic and multi-cultural society structure in Balkans. Starting by the end of 14th century the city was ruled by Ottoman’s and, as the time passed by it passed several transformations in administrative aspects and the property issue. Thus in late 1800’s it was given the status of Sanjak and was attached to the Vilayet of Kosovo. In this study, we try to give some information regarding the demographic and religious structure of the Ipek city in the last quarter of 19th century according to the data provided from the Salnamas of the Vilayet of Kosovo and the documents of the Ottoman Archive (Başbakanlık Osmanlı Arşivi). Also, it aims to give information about the relationship between Muslim and non-muslim groups and other religious institutions in the region.
