In 1869 the tale “The Italian Army During the Cholera of 1867” waspublished in the storybook “The Military Life”. This story-reportage iscommonly considered the first real reportage of Edmondo De Amicis. Thescene of this reportage is Sicily affected by a terrible cholera epidemic.Forty years later and two years before his death De Amcis came back toSicily and he found a different situation. Now he’s not a soldier of Italiangovernment but a very famous writer with a long and various literaryexperience. De Amicis in his last travelogue “Memory of a Travel inSicily”made a sentimental description of this experience bringing alsotogether elements like the wonder for the island’s beauty and the sadnessfor his lost youth and the feeling of coming death. These two texts give an interesting clue of the study of de Amicis’ writing, his linguistic and literary evolution.
