Türk bankacılık sektöründe etkinlik ve rekabet: 2002– 2007

Turkish banking sector, following the crisis year of 2001, went through a fast recovery period. Reduced profits during the crisis period began to increase again and the Turkish banking sector attracted many foreign investors. While the number of foreign firms in the sector and their shares has increased, the first five banks concentration ratio (CR5) which is theoretically expected to decrease has also increased. In this study, we investigated the efficiency-competition relationship for the Turkish banking sector using Panzar and Rosse (1987) model over the period of 2002-2007. The results show that competition is high in the sector related mainly to the fact that the number of efficient banks is high in 2005 and 2006 compared to the other years. For the rest of the years in this period, it is observed that the level of competition has decreased in parallel with a decline in efficiency scores.

Türk bankacılık sektörü, 2001 yılında yaşanan krizin ardından hızlı bir toparlanma süreci yaşamıştır. Kriz döneminde azalan karlar yeniden yükselmiş ve sektöre yabancıların ilgisi artmaya başlamıştır. Yabancı firmaların sektördeki sayısı ve payları artmaya başlamış, teorik olarak azalması beklenen ilk beş banka yoğunlaşma oranları (CR5) ise artış göstermiştir. Türk bankacılık sektöründe 2002–2007 döneminde etkinlik ve rekabet ilişkisini Panzar ve Rosse (1987) modeliyle incelediğimiz bu çalışmada, 2005 ve 2006 yıllarında sektörde etkin banka sayısının diğer yıllara göre daha fazla olmasına bağlı olarak sektörde rekabetin de yüksek olduğu sonucu ortaya çıkmıştır. Dönem içindeki diğer yıllarda etkinlik skorları ile birlikte rekabet düzeyinin de düşük olduğu görülmüştür.
