Until recently, historical development of the Ottoman guilds has been explained exclusively with the decline of the Ottoman economy. Some historians have recently rejected this traditional Eurocentric viewpoint and maintained that the historical evolution of these organizations was conditioned primarily by the local conditions and dynamics. In line with the same critical approach, the current article focuses on four major historical developments and argues that the response of the Ottoman guilds to these developments varied considerably from one setting to another, depending on local conditions and dynamics.
