The concept of literacy, which in the second part of 20th century was mostly associated with the abilities required for reading and writing, has gained different dimensions over the course of time. While it has involved the technical abilities related to efficiently making use of different objects such as knowledge, media and others on the one hand, it was also addressed as a concept that was shaped by the specific socio-cultural patterns and trends. The diversity in the meanings ascribed to the concept reveals the fact that many different literacy forms might co-exist together, even in the same social groups. As a consequence, religious literacy found its special place among the hotly debated academic topics.
