The Basmalah (In the name of God, All-Merciful, the All-Compassionate), has been one of the most widely debated issues in the science of exegesis. While commentators agree that the basmalah is a verse from the Qur'an, they are in disagreement on whether its appearance at the beginning of every chapter is an independent verse. Another issue of controversy among the commentators is whether the first Basmalah in the beginnig of al- Fatiha is a verse independent of all other basmalahs. In spite of this, the Basmalah at the beginning of Sura Fatiha has been given a number, indicating that it is a verse on its own. Taking into consideration its own unique features, the relationship between the Basmalah and the Opening Chapter (Al-Fatiha) has been considered in this study.
