Peirce’ün doğruluğu matematiksel bir kavram olan sınır ile felsefi bir kavram olan “yorumcular, araştırmacılar topluluğu” kavramlarıyla tanıtması pek çok eleştiriye sebep olmuştur. Ancak dikkatlice incelendiğinde bu kavramların onun işaretler teorisinde yerli yerine oturduğu ve felsefesi vizyonu ile tutarlılık arz ettiği görülür. Ona göre doğruluğu anlamanın yolu gerçekliği araştırmadan geçer. Buna göre, gerçekliği araştırma yöntemi, yani bilimsel metot pragmatik olarak doğruluğu araştırabileceğimiz tek yöntemdir, hatta doğruluk araştırmanın bizatihi kendisine işaret eder. Bu açıdan bakıldığında araştırma topluluğunun uzun vadede bulacağı sonuçlar da doğruluğu oluşturur. Bunun böyle gerçekleşeceğini umut etmeliyiz. Eğer başarı için umut yoksa araştırma için de neden yoktur.

Peirce’s two definitions of truth with “limit” which is a mathematical notion and with “community” which is a philosophical notion have been variously criticized. But, when it is looked at closely it will be seen that these notions fit in his philosophical vision and semeiotic theory and consistent with them. According to him, inquiry of reality is a prerequisite for understanding of the truth. Thus the method of inquiring reality, i.e. scientific method, is the only method for searching truth, even the idea of truth refers to the inquiry itself. When it is seen from this perspective the results of inquiry has been reached by the community in the long run form the truth. We do hope that we will be successful in our inquires. If there is no hope of success, there is no reason to inquire.
