The concept of gender role orientation is introduced as a reaction to the approach whereby psychological differences between women and men simplistically depend on the fact that they are biologically different. Although some argue that there is a linkage between individual characteristics and biological sex, it cannot be said that biological sex and individual’s characteristics have a strict consistency. Thus, a man could have feminine characteristics and a woman could have masculine characteristics. Consequently, androgyny appears as a gender role orientation. In this study, androgyny and other gender role orientations are studied. First, the difference between “biological sex” and “gender” and gender stereotypes which constitutes the basis of gender role orientation are explained. Second, androgyny and other gender role orientations are examined in detail and androgynous individuals and other sexual types are compared according to different individual characteristics as as result of the literature survey.
