The Tanzimat period, which was considered to be a turning point in Turkish history, brought a substantial change to community and state structures. The family is one of the institutions affected by this change in both psychological and social terms. The novels of this period attempt to instruct the community. For this reason, the appearance of woman in these novels represents their status as an evaluation of the effects of education and westernization. Idealized woman take their place beside those which are criticised in the Tanzimat novels. This study intends to present the changing life of woman, which is not recorded in history books concerned only with factual and concrete instances of their lives.
