A study about the words used for women in anatolian dialects

The narrative richness in the Turkish language is one of the most important topics which attracts researchers. It is known that Turkish person names are very prolific among the researches carried on this topic. However, studies regarding women’s names is not as evident in the related literature. According to Rosany, the main reason of this is that Turks did not see the girls’ fate in the same way as boys in the past and since the girls do not stay long with their parents, women’s names were not as important. Although Turkish proper female names do not often appear in the documents, there are a lot of names ascribed to women at every age and every position in Anatolian dialects. These names can be grouped as follows:1. According to the ages of women. 2. According to the physical appearances of women. 3. According to the behaviors of women. 4. According to the jobs of women. 5. According to the fecundity of women and so on. These words support the varied richness and creativity of Turkish in terms of language. Roots, suffixes and comparisons are used productively. The structures of some of these words can be explained linguistically. However, some of them still need to be explained in terms of their roots and suffixes. The data in this study is abundant regarding names given according to the behaviors of women. The value of women in society ıs reflected in the words. The classical woman portrait which is seen as the primary duty of woman can also be seen in the words. When the portrait of a woman in language and the realities of woman in Turkey are compared, a clear causal relation appears. Language is the mirror of the culture. The reflection of the views of a society about any topic constitutes the language which sustains the continuity of those views. For this reason, cultural aspects such as language which cause negative judgements should be taken into consideration while carrying out studies to improve women’s conditions in Turkey and solutions should be found to overcome these problems.
