Journalism has played a decisive role in construction of modern Ottoman-Turkish literature during the second half of the nineteenth century. Ahmet Mithat, as one of the leading figure in Ottoman journalism and literature, exemplifies the role of journalism in this process. The purpose of this paper is to show the interplay between journalism and authorship, and most importantly, how journalism has enabled him to cultivate some basic writing techniques in Ottoman- Turkish literature for the first time. I will discuss journalism was not only an instrument to ease publishing fictive works and an occupation to support himself; it is also a writing activity which facilitates basic writing attitudes and narrative techniques.
