Şerif Mardin'in "Jön Türklerin Siyasi Düşünceleri 1895-1908" isimli kitabı Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'nun son dönemlerindeki siyasi gelişmeleri, devleti kurtarmak için düşünülmüş fikir akımlarını ve laik bir ulus devletin kurulmasıyla sonuçlanacak olan modernleşme sürecindeki önemli isimleri okuyucuya aktarmaktadır. Jön Türkler arasında sivrilen İttihat ve Terakki Cemiyeti'nin savunduğu fikirler, Cemiyetle ihtilafa düşen liberal ve dinci yaklaşımlar, aslında ayrı ayrı her grubun "imparatorluğu nasıl kurtarırız" sorusuna odaklandığı bir dönemde incelenmiştir. Batılı düşüncelerin etkisi ve ilerleme kavramı, devleti bir arada tutma amacı taşıyan Osmanlıcılık fikriyle birleşmiş, din faktörü ise Jön Türkler arasında ortak bir anlayışa konu olamamış, düşünürler tarafında farklı yorumlanmıştır. Türkiye tarihinde modernleşme sürecinin en önemli köşe taşlarından olan ve birçok akademik çalışmaya ilham vermiş olan bu akımın en geniş kapsamlı analizlerinden biri de Şerif Mardin'in kitabıdır. Bu çalışmada İttihat ve Terakki Cemiyeti'nin Paris başkanlığını üstlenmiş olan Ahmet Rıza Bey'in fikirleri üzerinden Jön Türk hareketi ve imparatorluğun son dönemlerindeki düşünce akımları anlatılmaktadır.

Şerif Mardin's book, entitled "Political Thoughts of Young Turks, 1895-1908", enlightens the readers about the political developments in the last periods of Ottoman Empire, and in doing so chronicles currents of thought aimed to save the Ottoman empire and pinpoints prominent thinkers involved in the modernization process that would lead to the establishment of the Turkish secular nation-state. The book analyzes ideas defended by the Committee of Union and Progress-the most distinguished organisation among the Young Turks-, as well as the Liberal and Islamist approaches conflicting with those of the Committee and sheds light to an era during which all political fractions dealt with a common question: ""How can we save the Empire?". The influence of European ideas and the concept of progress coupled with the Ottomanist view aimed at holding the state together, and the factor of religion were far from establishing a common ground within the Young Turks movement but instead were subject to diverse interpretations. This movement has been one of the most significant milestones of modernization process in Turkish history and has inspired many academical studies. Yet it finds one of its most comprehensive analyses in the work of Şerif Mardin. In this study, the Young Turks movement and its doctrines are explained through the ideas of Ahmet Rıza, the leader of the Committee of Union and Progress Paris branch.
