GAP (Southeastern Anatolia Project) is a multi-sectorial, multipurpose and multi-component regional development project which involves 10% of Turkey’s land mass with Adıyaman, Batman, Diyarbakır, Gaziantep, Kilis, Mardin, Siirt, Şanlıurfa and Şırnak. 30 years have passed since GAP, whose intellectual basis goes back to 1960’s and whose foundations were laid in 1980’s, was started. In the extent of this project, the irrigation of 1.822 hectares of land, 22 dams over Fırat and Dicle rivers and 19 hydro-electric power plants are being stipulated. During the 30 years passed, according to 2010 data, of the 1.822 thousand hectares of land which was expected to be irrigated, 300 hectares of it was prepared for irrigation, which is only 16,5% of the total land supposed to have been irrigated.
