The role of lexical cohesion and coherence in promoting reading comprehension

What distinguishes a text from a non-text is texture (coherence). In any language, discourse producer has some resources to create texture in a text. Choice of lexical items of various types contributes to the textuality of a text. Regarding lexical cohesion, a writer creates semantic or lexical chains in a text and each chain consists of nods that act as building blocks of this chain. The role of these nods in a text is to activate the relevant schemata in the reader’s mind. The idea is, as Cook points out, stimulated by key words or phrases in the text or by the context.
The implication of this textual analysis to reading comprehension is that the discourse producer in the process of encoding his message provides the decoder of various stages with sign-points to guide him towards the main theme of discourse. The responsibility of the reader is to be sensitive to such sign-points and recognize their relationship to create lexical chains that contribute to the development of the conveyance of the writer’s intended message(s).

Bu metinsel çözümlemenin okuduğunu kavrama becerileri açısından ifade ettiği anlam şudur: Söylemin üreticisi, mesajını kodlama sürecinde çeşitli düzeylerde ana söylem temasına doğru kendisine kılavuzluk edecek kod çözücülerini işaret noktalarıyla birlikte verir. Okuyucunun sorumluluğu, yazarın niyet ettiği mesaj/ları iletme sürecine katkı sağlayan sözcüksel dizileri oluşturmak için bu gibi işaret noktalarına karşı hassas olmak ve aralarındaki ilişkiye aşina olmaktır.
