Erken dönem arap kültüründe peygamberlik tasavvuru

Hz. Muhammed’e kadar Araplar’ın peygamberlikle ilgili bilgileri geçmiş peygamberlerin kıssalarına dayanıyordu. Başlangıçta onlar peygamberi gaipten haber veren, geleceğe yönelik kehanetlerde bulunan ve kendisinde birtakım yetenekler bulunan büyücü, falcı ve sihirci gibi nitelemelerle tanımlamaya çalıştılar. Ancak bu tanımlamalar yetersiz kalınca, Yahudilerin bilgisine başvurdular. Neticede Araplar İslâm ile birlikte peygamberliğin mahiyetini öğrenince, bazı kabile şefleri bunu kendi çıkarları doğrultusunda kullanmak için Hz. Muhammed’i taklit ederek peygamberlik iddiasıyla ortaya çıktılar.

The knowledge concerning the prophethood of the Arabs until the Prophet was relied on the stories of past prophets. In the beginning, they began to define the Prophet as a person who informs from the invisible world, predicts the future, has unusual and tremendous power, sorcerer, magician, and etc. However, when these qualities were insufficient to define the Prophet, they applied to the knowledge of the Jews. At the end, when the Arabs learned the nature of the Prophet through Islam, some chiefs of tribes claimed their own prophethood by imitation of the Prophet for their own worldly benefits.
