Developing listening skills of 9th year students at çubuk imam hatip high school

The purpose of this study was to develop the listening skills of 9th year students at Cubuk Imam Hatip High School, which is necessary in learning English, with various listening activities and strategies on how to listen. It was carried out to show that listening skills in the teaching of English can be taught and improved and listening skills of the students can be developed by using various activities. The research was carried out with the 9th year students at Cubuk Imam Hatip High School. They were randomly assigned as the experimental and control groups. There were 29 students in the experimental group while there were 30 students in the control group. In order to assess their proficiency level in listening skills, both of the groups took the pre-test which was prepared to the aimed degree of success. The results showed that there was no statistically significant difference between the pre-test results of the experimental and control groups. Suggested supplementary materials were prepared in line with the curriculum decided by the Ministry of National Education and the results of questionnaire administered on the students in order to determine their needs and interests. Listening exercises were practiced by the experimental group in English classes during the first term. The control group continued their education in the same way as they studied previously. The data obtained from the post-test, taken at the end of the training, showed that there was an increase in the success of both of the groups; nevertheless, the increase in the experimental group was appreciably more than the increase in the control group. This appreciable difference in the success levels of the experimental and control groups showed that the treatment used in the study significantly contributed to the improvement in listening skills of the experimental group.

Bu çalışmanın amacı Çubuk İmam Hatip Lisesi 9. sınıf öğrencilerinin İngilizce öğreniminde gerekli olan dinleme becerilerini çeşitli aktivitelerden oluşan dinleme çalışmaları ve stratejileri ile geliştirmektir. Bu çalışma, İngilizce öğretiminde dinleme becerilerinin geliştirilebilir bir beceri olduğunu, çeşitli aktiviteler kullanılarak öğrencilerin dinleme becerilerinin geliştirilebileceğini göstermek amacı ile yürütülmüştür. Araştırma Çubuk İmam Hatip Lisesi 9. sınıf öğrencileri üzerinde yapılmıştır. Öğrenciler rastlantısal olarak deney ve kontrol grubu olarak belirlenmiştir. Deney grubunda 29, kontrol grubunda ise 30 öğrenci bulunmaktadır. Bu gruplar dinleme becerilerinin hangi seviyede olduğunu belirlemek amacı ile hedeflenen seviyede bir dinleme sınavına tabi tutulmuşlardır. Elde edilen veriler iki grup arasında anlamlı düzeyde bir başarı farkı olmadığını göstermiştir. Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı tarafından hazırlanan öğretim programı ve ilgi ve ihtiyaçlarını belirlemek için öğrencilere uygulanan anket sonuçları ışığında, İngilizce derslerinde işlenmek üzere tavsiye edilen tamamlayıcı dinleme aktiviteleri hazırlanmıştır. Deney grubu ile birinci dönem boyunca İngilizce derslerinde bu aktiviteler yapılmıştır. Kontrol grubundaki öğrenciler ise daha önceden İngilizce derslerini işledikleri metotlarla öğrenimlerine devam etmişlerdir. Eğitim sonunda yapılan son test değerlerinden elde edilen veriler, iki grubun da başarı düzeylerinde bir artış olduğunu; fakat bu artışın deney grubunda fark edilebilir bir derecede daha fazla olduğunu göstermiştir. Kontrol grubu ile deney grubu başarı seviyeleri arasındaki belirgin orandaki bu farklılık da, İngilizce derslerinde yapılan dinleme çalışmalarının öğrencilerin dinleme becerilerini geliştirmede büyük katkısı olduğunu ortaya koymuştur.
